Author's presentation copy, inscribed "For J. B. Pinker, Joseph Conrad." The book marks the first stage of Conrad learning to write for popular magazines: "in that book I come nearer to the popular notion of tale-telling than in any previous work of mine" (writing to Unwin, Collected Letters, II., p). Central in the work of Joseph Conrad is the theme of isolation, of the loneliness of man and of alienation from one's own kind, a theme which, in some form, dominates the work of many modern writers and thinkers. A study of the criticism of Conrad shows that this preoccupation with the isolated man has always been noticed and was early linked to Conrad's own position in the world as an exile. Edward Garnett was born on 5 January in London. His father, Richard Garnett (–), was a writer and librarian at the British Museum. On 31 August he married Constance Black, known for her translations of Russian literature; the writer David Garnett (–) was their son.
